SANTA BARBARA, Calif.—The targeted opening date for the new Target Store at the corner of State Street and La Cumbre Road has been pushed back by at least six months. Back in January, Target officials expected to open the first Target store in Santa Barbara in October 2018. Looking at the site of the former Galleria today, it is obvious that more work needs to be done.

The Clovis Roundup — November 14, 2017
Merely a few short years ago, the now bustling Trading Post shopping center on the southeast corner of Herndon and Clovis avenues was home to just a few eateries and small retailers barely holding on due to a lack of an anchor tenant and visibility. With a Wal-Mart Supercenter opening up across the street in the all-new Clovis Crossing shopping center, previous grocery store anchor Save Mart moved to the east to occupy the former Ralphs space next door to GB3 on the northeast corner of Fowler and Herndon, leaving the Trading Post behind. Gradually, other shops within the center began moving as well or shutting their doors altogether. Once again, as has frequently happened in neighboring Fresno, another old shopping center seemed to be left behind in the wake of a shiny new construction nearby. Luckily for Clovis, the Trading Post shopping center’s story had a better end. Rather than fizzle and become forgotten, the center was revived thanks to a near $24 million investment loan from Walker & Dunlop, Inc.

A Clovis shopping center is the beneficiary of a $24 million permanent financing loan, announced one of the largest commercial finance companies in the US. The 127,764 square-foot Trading Post Shopping Center at Clovis and Herndon avenues had sat mostly vacant for several years when Rich Development Enterprises, LLC, purchased the center in 2015 with a plan to rehab the property. Two anchor spaces were vacant at the time, and only 20 percent of the center was occupied. Rich Development — which also developed the Marketplace at El Paseo shopping center in northwest Fresno — expanded and brought in national and regional tenants including Sprouts, Ross, Skechers, Tuesday Morning, Dollar Tree, Deli Delicious, Union Bank and Pieology Pizza.

Facing overwhelming competition from e-commerce titan Amazon and extreme discount retailers, Target is unleashing 11 new small-format stores this week including one in Orange. The 41,000-square-foot store, at Chapman and Yorba is the second small format Target to open in Orange County. It quietly opened to shoppers Tuesday night after a private ribbon cutting with city officials. The Orange location, which replaces a closed Ralphs, has a much larger collection of food and merchandise than the small-format store that opened mid-July in Irvine.

Fresno’s newly built Olive Garden is almost ready. For years, the area’s sole Olive Garden restaurant on Shaw Avenue in Clovis has attracted crowds willing to wait for their pasta, bread sticks and salad. The newest Olive Garden opens Monday at the Marketplace at El Paseo, the shopping center near Highway 99 and Herndon Avenue in Fresno. The restaurant will open after a 10 a.m. ribbon cutting with the Fresno Chamber of Commerce. This is the same center that will eventually have a Cracker Barrel Old Country store and restaurant. That down-home restaurant serves comfort food like hash brown casserole and has a country-style store with rocking chairs out front.

There’s even more evidence now that a hotly anticipated Cracker Barrel restaurant will indeed be opening in Fresno. Local media for the last several months now have been speculating that the country-themed restaurant and gift shop would be opening in the Marketplace at El Paseo shopping center near Herndon Avenue and Highway 99 in northwest Fresno. Earlier this month ABC 30 made that announcement, but did not name the source of that information. The Fresno Bee has been checking up on the rumors for months, since the shopping center’s website, marketplaceatelpaseo.com, listed Panera Bread and Cracker Barrel as retailers that are “Coming Soon” to a new phase of the center, which currently has a Target anchor and several other stores.

Cracker Barrel is coming to Fresno after all. A local retail broker, Commercial Retail Associates, has reported to The Bee’s leases section that Cracker Barrel has signed a lease. It’s going into a 9,170-square-foot space at the southwest corner of Herndon Avenue and Riverside Drive, part of the Marketplace at El Paseo near Highway 99. Retail brokers help businesses find places to rent and property owners find renters. The agents working on this deal were Sam Bogdanovich and Nathan Negri. Bogdanovich would not comment; Negri could not be reached.

Social media is abuzz with the possibility that the popular Cracker Barrel Old Country Store and its restaurant may open a location in Fresno. Will it? Maybe. Maybe not – and there’s several reasons not to get too excited yet. First, know that the down-home, country-style store and restaurant serving classic American dishes like meatloaf and “chicken n’ dumplins” has locations in more than 40 states. None are in California, though plenty of locals make a point of hitting up Cracker Barrel when they’re traveling.

Clovis will get its first Rubio’s Coastal Grill Thursday. There are giveaways – including $50 gift cards and Rubio’s merchandise – for the first 50 customers after the 10 a.m. opening. The restaurant is at 950 Herndon Ave., at Clovis Avenue. Rubio’s is in the Trading Post Shopping Center, taking over the space Hunan Chinese Restaurant left behind when it closed. CLOVIS, Calif. (KFSN) -- New life has come back to an older shopping complex in Clovis. The Trading Post, located at Clovis and Herndon, has a new look after new anchor stores went up. Business owners are reacting to the changes. The Trading Post shopping center in Clovis is now filled with cars and bustling with activity after being nearly empty for eight years. "I think it's great. It's come a long ways, and it's wonderful to have Sprouts here-- and Ross. Its really improved," said Patty Vanderdussen, Fresno. Valley residents have been shopping at the complex since it was made over and new stores set up residence. A little shopping gossip for you this week with news of openings and closures at centers in Fresno and Clovis. First, a shocker from Fig Garden Village: Coach and White House Black Market stores have closed. The purse seller and the clothing store – both big names for the center – closed quietly in recent weeks but it sounds like someone is waiting in the wings to take over. Why did they close? Coach’s corporate office would only say that it closed the store at the end of its 10-year lease. It does not have any plans to reopen anywhere else at this time, saying it will continue to serve area customers through Macy’s and its website. White House Black Market also opened in Fig Garden in 2006 and was likely at the end of a 10-year lease, too (though it did not return messages seeking comment).

It is opening in the former Thai Fusion restaurant space, which closed last year, at Herndon and Willow avenues.

Tesla is getting ready to debut a Supercharger station in northwest Fresno with 10 stalls to charge its electric cars. The chargers, which will be up and running in the next few weeks, are at The Marketplace at El Paseo, the new shopping center at Highway 99 and Herndon avenue. The red-and-white stations with the distinctive Tesla logo are next to Jersey Mike’s Subs and Pieology in the northeast corner of the parking lot. The stations open up a new avenue of long-distance travel for owners of the electric cars who usually plug them in overnight at home. At the new station, Tesla owners can plug in for 30 minutes and charge enough to travel 170 miles. The Model S Tesla with a range of more than 270 miles can get fully recharged in under an hour.
