Target set to open small format store in Santa Barbara in 2018

Santa Barbara Family & Life — January 3, 2018

Target plans to open its first store in Santa Barbara in October 2018, a 34,000-square foot, small-format store located in the Galleria, near the intersection of State Street and La Cumbre Rd.

Target’s strategic priorities include reaching new guests by expanding small-format stores in dense suburban neighborhoods, urban areas and near college campuses. Target’s small-format store assortments are tailored to meet the needs of local guests. The retailer is on track to operate 130 small-format stores by the end of 2019, serving new guests in communities and neighborhoods where a traditional-sized Target store may not fit. Guests who shop Target’s existing small-format stores open around the country have responded well to having these customized shopping experiences available in their neighborhoods.

“We are thrilled to be joining the Santa Barbara community in 2018 and look forward to providing guests with a convenient shopping experience that is uniquely Target. Our Galleria store will offer residents and visitors the ease and inspiration of a curated assortment of home goods, apparel and more as well as a pick-up point for online orders,” said Mark Schindele, senior vice president, Properties, Target.

Target has signed a lease with Gryphon Capital for the Galleria store, which will offer residents and visitors a quick-trip shopping experience with a curated assortment mix, including:

  • A grocery selection with a focus on wellness offerings, including fresh produce, grab-and-go items, snacks and meal solutions
  • An adult beverage selection, including beer and wine
  • A curated assortment of home décor and accessories
  • A broad beauty assortment presented in a boutique-style setting
  • Apparel and accessories for men, women and kids, including offerings from new Target-exclusive brands A New Day and Goodfellow & Co.
  • Portable technology products and entertainment accessories
  • A selection of toys and sporting goods
  • Services will include a CVS Pharmacy and Order Pickup

Target’s Order Pickup service offers even more convenience and added security with the ability to buy online and pickup in store. More than 95 percent of Order Pickup orders are ready in less than an hour for guests at their local Target store.

“We are building on the success of our longstanding partnership with Target with the Santa Barbara the Galleria store. The Galleria is a great fit for Target and our customers, who will benefit from a unique and convenient shopping experience,” said Chris Shane, Managing Partner, Gryphon Capital, LLC.

The Galleria store will employ approximately 50-70 team members. Target is an employer that values the individuals who come together as a team to serve guests in the community and provides team members with opportunities to build and develop skills for their careers. In October, Target announced plans to raise its minimum hourly wage for all team members to $11, along with a commitment to increasing the minimum hourly wage to $15 by the end of 2020. This significant investment the team will allow Target to continue to recruit and retain strong team members and provide an elevated experience for its guests and in the communities it serves.
