A new hamburger chain has been finalized for phase two of the El Paseo Marketplace development in northwest Fresno.

Wayback Burgers, an international restaurant with locations from Chowchilla to Brunei, is projected to arrive in Fresno by late 2019 or early 2020, according to Chris Shane, managing partner and founder of Gryphon Capital. Gryphon Capital is the development agency working on El Paseo Marketplace.

This will be the first Wayback Burgers restaurant in the Fresno area. The franchise has locations in 30 states and nine countries outside the United States.

The company is based in Connecticut and started in Delaware in 1991, according to Patrick Conlin, senior vice president for Wayback Burgers.

The location itself is still in the works as architectural drawings still need to be drawn up and approved, according to Conlin.

Some of the food on the menu at Wayback Burgers is considered halal, which means it is allowed under Islamic dietary laws. The chicken, as well as the cheesesteak is sourced from meat humanely slaughtered that abides by restrictions set in the religion, said Conlin.

This started when a franchisee near a college wanted to have menu options to accommodate the Muslim population there and went to the corporate office requesting the change.

Shane said Wayback Burgers is just one of the businesses set to occupy the more than 200,000 square feet of development at El Paseo as part of phase two. Phase one, which opened in 2014, is anchored by a Target store.

Future tenants include Regal Cinemas and Hobby lobby.

After phase two, El Paseo will consist of 600,000 square feet of retail space.
